Wood Rot Coverup

If you’ve ever done a coverup job on your house before selling it to an unsuspecting buyer, there’s a special place I hold in my heart for you.

I knew I had to replace some rotten battens, but the wood behind it appeared to be fine.   Then I discovered that the bottom 12-inches was actually sheetmetal, covering up tons of wood rot.

Here’s my rotten house:

The sheet metal was caulked on the bottom, so any water that got behind it sat there and rotted the siding.  There was also quite a large ant farm along the bottom edge.  Complete with larva and tunnels.

Ants!

Looks like I will be replacing the entire siding now.
